Joseph Bush, Possessing a Firearm as a Convicted Felon, Virginia 2022

RICHMOND, Va. – A Richmond man was sentenced today to seven years in prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

Joseph Bush, 31, was arrested on July 28, 2022 in Gilpin Court after a domestic assault call. His girlfriend reported that Bush had hit her in the face and neck, scratched her wrist, and smashed her phone. She also stated that earlier in July, Bush had pointed a firearm at her face.

Richmond Police Department officers found a loaded Glock 9mm handgun with an extended magazine from Bush’s pants leg during the arrest. The firearm had been reported stolen three months earlier. Additionally, officers discovered suboxone strips, cocaine, 9mm ammunition, .22 caliber ammunition, and a scale inside Bush’s bag.

Bush has prior convictions for robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and being a violent felon in possession of a firearm. He committed the current offense within six months of his release from state prison and while he was on supervised probation.

U.S. District Judge Roderick C. Young handed down the sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica L. Wright prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The program brings together law enforcement and community organizations to foster trust, prevent violence, and enforce strategic priorities.

Bush’s sentencing marks a significant outcome in the ongoing efforts to combat gun violence in Richmond, Virginia.
