Jose Luis Rosales-Betancourt, Unlawful Reentry, Texas 2024

TYLER, Texas — In a stark reminder of the enforcement’s unyielding stance against illegal immigration, Jose Luis Rosales-Betancourt, a 39-year-old Mexican national, stands accused of unlawfully returning to the United States. The Eastern District of Texas Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs has announced the charges.

Rosales-Betancourt, who has been living in Tyler, was named in an indictment this week by a federal grand jury. The document accuses him of unlawful reentry following removal, a serious charge that stems from his twice previous deportations in 2008 and 2013.

But this is not Rosales-Betancourt’s first brush with the law. Public records reveal that he was convicted in Smith County in 2006 for aggravated robbery, resulting in a five-year prison sentence. In 2012, he faced another conviction for illegal reentry following removal in the Eastern District of Texas, earning him a 30-month sentence.

The charges against Rosales-Betancourt are part of Operation Take Back America, a broad initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and eradicating cartels and transnational criminal organizations. The operation leverages resources from various Department of Justice task forces to protect communities from violent crime.

Should he be found guilty, the defendant faces up to 20 years in federal prison and deportation. This case is currently being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations-Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, with prosecution handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lucas Machicek.

As always, a federal indictment is not proof of guilt. Rosales-Betancourt is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
