Defendant Threatened President and Family, Faces 10 Years in Prison
A resident of West Leisenring, Pennsylvania, has been charged with threatening the President and the members of the immediate family of the President. Joseph H. Savage, 34, is accused of writing a graphic letter to the White House on October 26, 2012, while incarcerated and awaiting disposition on state charges.
According to the indictment, Savage’s letter threatened to kill the President and the President’s family. The letter was reportedly written while Savage was being held at a correctional facility in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
The indictment, which was returned on February 25, 2013, charges Savage with two counts of threats against the President and the President’s family. If convicted, Savage could face a maximum of 10 years in prison, a fine of $500,000 or both.
The case was investigated by the United States Secret Service, which conducted a thorough investigation leading to the indictment. Assistant United States Attorney Shardul S. Desai is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
An indictment is an accusation and does not necessarily mean that the defendant is guilty. However, the charges against Savage are serious and could have significant consequences if he is found guilty.
The Federal Sentencing Guidelines will determine the actual sentence imposed on Savage, if convicted. The guidelines take into account the seriousness of the offense and any prior criminal history the defendant may have.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania, led by United States Attorney David J. Hickton, is committed to protecting the safety and security of the President and his family. The office will continue to work closely with the United States Secret Service to investigate and prosecute cases like this one.
