Joseph Lee, Meth Possession, Defuniak Springs FL, 2022

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, FL – A Walton County man is facing a long stretch behind bars after a federal judge handed down a 15-year sentence for possessing nearly half a kilogram of methamphetamine. Joseph Fletcher Lee, Jr., 47, of Defuniak Springs, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of the dangerous drug.

The bust went down October 14, 2021, when a combined force of law enforcement – including the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement – executed search warrants at Lee’s residence and property. What they found wasn’t a small-time operation.

Investigators seized approximately 466.5 grams of methamphetamine – close to a pound – alongside a digital scale used for weighing the drugs and a staggering $23,419 in U.S. currency. The cash suggests Lee wasn’t just a user, but a significant player in the local drug trade, profiting from the misery of others.

U.S. Attorney Jason R. Coody for the Northern District of Florida, emphasized the seriousness of the crime and the commitment of federal agencies to combat methamphetamine distribution. “Communities throughout our district are plagued by methamphetamine distribution,” Coody stated. “We are committed to work with our law enforcement partners to identify and aggressively prosecute drug traffickers who distribute these addictive, controlled substances.”

Lee’s 15-year federal prison sentence is mandatory minimum, reflecting the severity of the charges. But it doesn’t end there. Upon his release, Lee will be subject to ten years of supervised release, meaning he’ll be monitored by authorities for a decade after serving his time. Assistant United States Attorney J. Ryan Love prosecuted the case.

This case is another example of the ongoing battle against illegal drug trafficking in Florida, and the dedication of federal and local agencies to dismantling these operations. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida, one of 94 nationwide, continues to pursue those who profit from the distribution of dangerous substances.
