A 58-year-old man from Mabton, Washington, has been sentenced to 21 years in federal prison for the abuse of two minors.
Joseph Leonard Roy was given the sentence by Chief United States District Judge Stanley A. Bastian on April 7, 2023, for two counts of Abusive Sexual Contact of a Minor.
The abuse took place between 2017 and 2018 in a home on the Yakama Nation, where Roy had access to the victims. He was dating a relative of the victims at the time of the abuse.
One of the victims spoke out to a trusted family member, who then contacted authorities to report the exploitation. Roy pleaded guilty to the charges on November 29, 2022.
As part of his sentence, Roy will serve an additional 20 years on federal supervision after he is released from prison.
U.S. Attorney Vanessa R. Waldref stated, ‘My heart breaks for the victims in this case. I am grateful for their courage to come forward and engage with law enforcement to seek justice.’
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Yakama Nation Tribal Police Department, and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michal Murphy.
