Joshua Almeida, Possession of Child Pornography, Texas 2013

VICTORIA, Texas – Joshua Almeida, 33, is headed to prison for his involvement in a disturbing crime that has shaken the nation. According to a recent investigation, Almeida was found to be in possession of child pornography, a crime that carries severe consequences.

Almeida pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography on December 2, 2013, in a United States District Court. He was subsequently sentenced to 72 months in federal prison by Senior U.S. District Judge John D. Rainey. The judge took into consideration Almeida’s cooperation with the authorities and his acceptance of responsibility for his crimes.

In handing down the sentence, Judge Rainey stated that Almeida and people like him who possess child pornography drive the market that leads to its creation. This harsh reality highlights the severity of the issue and the need for strict action against those who commit such heinous crimes.

As part of his sentence, Almeida will also serve 10 years of supervised release following the completion of his prison term. During this time, he will be required to comply with numerous conditions of release designed to limit his access to children and the Internet. He will also be ordered to register as a sex offender, a designation that will have far-reaching consequences for his future.

The investigation that led to Almeida’s arrest began on March 18, 2012, when the Victoria County Sheriff’s Office conducted an undercover online investigation into persons trading child pornography. A computer that ultimately traced back to Almeida was found to be offering numerous images of child pornography for distribution. A state search warrant was executed on Almeida’s home in Victoria on September 27, 2012, and several electronic storage devices were seized and identified as belonging to Almeida.

A subsequent computer forensics search of those devices led to the discovery of numerous files containing child pornography. The evidence collected during the investigation was presented in court, and Almeida’s guilty plea was accepted. His sentence serves as a reminder that those who engage in such activities will face severe consequences.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section. The project aims to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse by marshaling federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
