Joshua Davidson, Sexual Assault, Alabama 2020

A former Dallas County deputy sheriff has been sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison for the heinous crime of sexually assaulting a woman while in her custody.

According to the evidence, Joshua Davidson, 33, used his position of power to place the victim in a vulnerable situation on January 30, 2020. He drove her down a desolate road, where she was forced to perform oral sex on him against her will. The victim’s fear of Davidson led her to cooperate with his demands, fearing for her life.

The victim reported the assault immediately, and an investigation was launched by the FBI Mobile Field Office. “Today’s sentence sends a clear message that officers who abuse their positions of power to sexually assault women in their custody will face significant prison time for their unlawful actions,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke. “The Justice Department will not tolerate sexual misconduct committed by law enforcement officers who were sworn to serve and protect their communities.”

U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello echoed Clarke’s sentiments, stating, “The citizens of Dallas County rightfully rely on their law enforcement officers to serve and protect them, not assault and abuse them.” The case highlights the importance of holding law enforcement officers accountable for their actions and maintaining the trust between law enforcement and the community.

The FBI Mobile Field Office’s Special Agent in Charge, Paul Brown, emphasized that all law enforcement officers must adhere to the highest standard of professional conduct. “Whenever someone chooses to violate the civil rights of the people they are sworn to protect, they will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Arrington for the Southern District of Alabama and Trial Attorneys Maura White and MarLa Duncan of the Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section.

Joshua Davidson’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of abusing one’s position of power.
