Fulton Varsity High School Coach Sentenced in Child Pornography Case
Syracuse, NY – Joshua Demars, a 38-year-old former coach at Fulton Varsity High School, has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for receiving, transporting, and possessing child pornography.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, Demars was sentenced yesterday after pleading guilty to the charges. As part of his plea, Demars admitted to communicating with minors on the Snapchat application to receive images and videos of child pornography.
Demars also admitted to using his Dropbox account to upload a video of a 5-7 year-old female being sexually abused by an adult male. Additionally, he acknowledged possessing hundreds of videos and images of child pornography on several of his personal devices.
Following his term of imprisonment, Demars will be placed on supervised release for 10 years and will be required to register as a sex offender. Demars was also ordered to pay restitution to the victims he solicited on Snapchat.
The case was investigated by the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Buffalo Field Office, the New York State Police (NYSP) Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the NYSP Troop D Computer Crime Unit. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Tuck and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Carbone prosecuted Demars as part of Project Safe Childhood.
Launched in May 2006, Project Safe Childhood is a federal initiative led by United States Attorney’s Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section. The program aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet, as well as identify and rescue victims.
The case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of child exploitation and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. As a community, it is essential that we continue to report suspicious activity and support efforts to prevent child abuse and exploitation.
