Joshua Roberts-Sprinkle, Shotgun Possession, Montana 2023

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Joshua Alan Roberts-Sprinkle, 36, of East Helena, Montana, is headed to federal prison for more than two years after admitting to possessing a dangerously modified and unregistered shotgun. The sentence, handed down today by Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris, includes a 27-month prison term followed by three years of supervised release. Roberts-Sprinkle’s conviction underscores the federal government’s ongoing crackdown on illegal firearms and those who flout gun laws.

The case originated on October 27, 2022, when law enforcement moved to arrest Roberts-Sprinkle on an outstanding warrant in East Helena. The arrest quickly escalated into a search of his vehicle, revealing a disturbing cache of weapons and contraband. Along with a loaded AR-style rifle and a .40-caliber handgun, officers discovered a heavily altered Savage Arms/Stevens 94, .410-caliber shotgun.

Court documents detail how Roberts-Sprinkle had illegally shortened the shotgun’s stock and barrel, reducing its overall length from a legal 44 inches to a mere 21 ½ inches, with a barrel length of just 14 inches. This modification transformed the firearm into a destructive device, falling squarely under federal regulations requiring registration – a requirement Roberts-Sprinkle ignored. The discovery of methamphetamine residue in a glass container and a ballistic vest further painted a picture of a man prepared for violence.

Roberts-Sprinkle pleaded guilty in May to possession of an unregistered firearm, acknowledging his violation of federal firearms laws. U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich, leading the prosecution, stated the sentence sends a clear message: illegally modifying and possessing firearms will not be tolerated. The ATF, alongside the East Helena and Helena Police Departments, spearheaded the investigation, demonstrating a collaborative effort to remove dangerous weapons from the streets.

This case is being touted as part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. PSN focuses on building trust with communities, supporting local violence prevention programs, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and meticulously tracking results. However, critics argue that PSN often disproportionately impacts marginalized communities without addressing the root causes of violence.

The outcome of this case is likely to fuel debate over gun control and the proliferation of illegally modified firearms. While authorities celebrate the conviction as a victory for public safety, concerns remain about the ease with which individuals can acquire and alter weapons, circumventing existing regulations. Roberts-Sprinkle’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unregistered firearms and the commitment of federal agencies to pursue those who break the law.
