BAKERSFIELD, CA – Joshua Ruic Kimball, 40, of Bakersfield, is facing federal charges after authorities uncovered a massive firearms trafficking operation linked to over 100 guns recovered at crime scenes stretching across California and beyond. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Fresno Police Department brought Kimball down, alleging he used his business, Show Off Sports LLC, as a front for illegal sales.

According to court documents, the scheme wasn’t about legitimate business; it was about getting guns into the wrong hands. Law enforcement started connecting the dots in 2021 when firearms seized in connection with various crimes were traced back to Kimball. The numbers kept climbing, eventually exceeding 100 weapons linked to his operation. Kimball allegedly bypassed all legal requirements, selling firearms in bulk without recording transactions with the ATF or conducting mandatory background checks or waiting periods as required by state law.

Undercover agents infiltrated Kimball’s operation, posing as buyers. They were able to purchase multiple weapons from him, including a short-barreled rifle and several silencers – all without the necessary paperwork. U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert was blunt: “Under the guise of operating a legal firearms shop, Kimball was selling firearms in bulk….” Talbert’s office is prosecuting the case, emphasizing the strong collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies.

The impact of Kimball’s alleged actions is significant. Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderamma hailed “Operation Last Member” as a major win, stating the recovery of 102 crime guns from a single source is a “significant achievement.” He added, “These guns will no longer pose a threat to our community.” The Central Valley Crime Gun Task Force, a joint effort between the Fresno PD and ATF, led the investigation.

Kimball was arrested Wednesday and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Christopher D. Baker. If convicted of unlawful trafficking of firearms controlled by the National Firearms Act and unlawful trafficking of firearms, Kimball faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the first charge, and 10 years in prison and another $250,000 fine for the second. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Robert L. Veneman-Hughes and Stephanie M. Stokman are handling the prosecution.

The ATF’s Special Agent in Charge Jennifer Cicolani underscored the agency’s priority: “There is no higher priority than protecting our communities from firearms violence.” The case highlights the importance of crime gun intelligence and collaborative efforts to stem the flow of illegal firearms. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities haven’t ruled out the possibility of additional charges or arrests.
