Jovan Martinez, Methamphetamine Trafficking and Firearms Charges, New Mexico 2014

Grimy Times has learned that Albuquerque man Jovan Martinez, 29, has pleaded guilty to federal narcotics trafficking and firearms charges. According to court documents, Martinez was found in possession of a revolver and ammunition after being arrested by the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) for stealing a bait vehicle on June 17, 2014.

Martinez, a convicted felon, was previously sentenced for residential burglary twice in 2007 and twice in 2008, making him prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. Despite this, Martinez was found to be in possession of a revolver and ammunition, which he had obtained by trading $80.00 cash and some methamphetamine for the firearm on June 16, 2014.

Under the terms of his plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Martinez will be sentenced to 12 years in prison followed by a term of supervised release to be determined by the court. Martinez also admitted to distributing the methamphetamine found in his possession.

The case was investigated by the Albuquerque office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the APD. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lynn Wei-Yu Wang and Presiliano Torrez are prosecuting the case.

Martinez was originally charged in a criminal complaint on June 17, 2014, and later indicted on July 10, 2014 for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Martinez was charged with distribution of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

As part of his plea agreement, Martinez admitted to trading $80.00 cash and some methamphetamine for the firearm on June 16, 2014, and distributing the methamphetamine found in his possession. Martinez’s guilty plea brings an end to a lengthy investigation into his involvement in narcotics trafficking and firearms charges.

Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
