Jovante Matthews Charged with Money Laundering, New Orleans LA, 2024

A federal grand jury has indicted Jovante Matthews, 35, of New Orleans, on charges of money laundering, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and making false statements to a financial institution.

According to the indictment, Matthews allegedly laundered millions of dollars through a complex scheme involving shell companies and fake invoices. The scheme allowed him to conceal the true source of the funds and avoid detection by law enforcement.

The indictment alleges that Matthews conspired with others to launder the money, using a network of shell companies and bank accounts to move the funds. He allegedly used the money to purchase luxury items, including a $500,000 mansion in the suburbs of New Orleans.

Matthews was arrested on February 10, 2024, and is currently being held without bail at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New Orleans. His attorneys, Aris W. Cox, Maurice Landrieu, Sarah Dawkins, Claude J. Kelly, Warner Bartlett Thompson, and Alexandra Triana Giavotella, have declined to comment on the charges.

The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Dawkins leading the prosecution. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) New Orleans field office.

The indictment is a significant development in the ongoing effort to combat money laundering and financial crimes in the United States. It highlights the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and financial institutions to prevent and detect these types of crimes.

Matthews is scheduled to appear in court on March 25, 2024, for a status hearing. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison on each of the money laundering counts, as well as up to 5 years in prison on the false statements charge.
