Jackson, Miss – The grim reaper of justice has met its mark in the case of Bryan Jones, 45, a former Jackson Police Department (JPD) officer. Today, U.S. District Judge Dan Jordan doled out a 27-month federal prison sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, for Jones’s crimes of extortion, announced U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis and FBI Special Agent in Charge Donald Alway.
The judge’s hammer fell after Jones was caught red-handed taking cash during a stop from undercover FBI agents, a violation of the Hobbs Act. The rogue officer, with his service pistol holstered on his belt and driving his patrol car, failed to record or deposit the money into Jackson Police Department evidence as he should have.
Jones’s downfall began when a confidential source directed him to meet an alleged drug dealer – who was actually an undercover agent. In his capacity as a police officer, Jones conducted illegal searches, seizing $4,000 and $5,000. He then split the money with the informant, neglecting to document or turn it over to the department.
The FBI and Jackson Police Department worked tirelessly to investigate this case, while Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mary Helen Wall and Erin Chalk prosecuted the charges.
For his actions, Jones will serve time behind bars, marking a stark reminder of the corruption that can fester within the ranks of law enforcement.
Bryan Jones’s sentence has sent shockwaves through Jackson, Miss., as residents grapple with the reality of police misconduct. His case serves as a testament to the ongoing fight against public corruption and the relentless pursuit of justice.
