GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Sharalyn McClain, a former Mississippi Department of Corrections officer, has been indicted for beating an inmate at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility. The charge against McClain, 28, is a felony civil rights offense, stemming from her role in the assault and for aiding others in committing it.
The indictment also accuses McClain of using a dangerous weapon during the attack, which caused injury to the inmate. Today’s announcement was made by Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband, U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst for the Southern District of Mississippi, and FBI Jackson Acting Special Agent in Charge Luis M. Quesada.
Should McClain be found guilty, she faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. It’s important to note that an indictment is merely an accusation, and McClain is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The investigation into this case was led by the FBI’s Jackson, Mississippi, Field Office. Julia Gegenheimer and Cameron Bell from the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Glenda Haynes, are handling the prosecution.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the serious nature of excessive force in correctional facilities and the commitment to justice by federal authorities.
