A Sioux Falls man has been sentenced to federal prison for possessing and selling a firearm as a felon, according to a recent announcement from U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell.
Jerad Wade Olson, 35, was sentenced to three years and 10 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Olson was convicted of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, a charge that carries significant consequences given his previous felony convictions. The sentencing took place on December 16, 2024, marking the culmination of a lengthy investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Sioux Falls Police Department.
The ATF identified Olson as a seller of firearms in the Sioux Falls area in December 2023. An agent posed as a buyer and established contact with Olson, who agreed to sell the agent a Walther 9mm pistol for $500. The agent met with Olson and completed the sale later that day at Olson’s residence in Vermillion.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. On May 26, 2021, the U.S. launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on core principles of fostering trust and legitimacy, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
Olson was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following the sentencing. This case serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of possessing and selling firearms as a felon, and the importance of community-based programs in preventing violence.
