Birmingham, AL – In a shocking case of attempted murder, Juan Carlos Hernandez, a 35-year-old Honduran national, has been charged with attempting to murder a federal officer after shooting at Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) special agents.
According to the Department of Justice, on February 24, Hernandez was involved in a fentanyl sale in Phoenix, Arizona, when DEA agents attempted to arrest him. Hernandez, who is an illegal alien, allegedly shot at the agents, sparking a violent confrontation.
The suspect, who has a lengthy criminal record, was eventually subdued and taken into custody. Hernandez is currently being held without bail at the Maricopa County Jail.
The indictment, which was handed down by a federal grand jury, charges Hernandez with one count of attempted murder of a federal officer, a felony offense punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Hernandez’s prior convictions include felony charges for possession of a deadly weapon and possession of narcotics. His immigration status was not disclosed by the Department of Justice.
Assistant U.S. Attorney, [Name], is leading the prosecution of Hernandez, who is expected to face trial in the coming months. The DEA and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are cooperating in the investigation.
