Juan Gaspar-Adan, Juan Gaspar-Adan Unlawful Reentry, Mississippi 2019

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Two men are facing serious consequences after pleading guilty to a dangerous crime. Juan Gaspar-Adan, a 24-year-old citizen of Mexico, and Bartolo Lopez-Garcia, a 25-year-old citizen of Guatemala, have both been charged with unlawful reentry by an alien after removal.

According to court documents, Gaspar-Adan and Lopez-Garcia had previously been removed from the United States, with Gaspar-Adan being removed in 2014 and Lopez-Garcia in 2012. However, both suspects were arrested in 2018 for driving under the influence (DUI) in Hattiesburg and were convicted in local courts.

The suspects were arrested on September 25, 2018, and September 8, 2018, respectively, and were subsequently charged with unlawful reentry by an alien after removal. The charges carry a maximum penalty of two years in prison followed by one year of supervised release and a maximum $250,000 fine.

Both Gaspar-Adan and Lopez-Garcia are scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett on January 11, 2019, in Hattiesburg. Following their prison sentences, both suspects also face being removed from the United States.

U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst praised the cooperation between law enforcement agencies in bringing these cases to justice. ‘We appreciate the hard work of our partners at the University of Southern Mississippi Police Department, the City of Hattiesburg Police Department, and the Forrest County Sheriff’s Department in helping to identify and prosecute these individuals,’ Hurst said.

The cases against Gaspar-Adan and Lopez-Garcia are a reminder of the serious consequences of reentering the United States after being previously deported. The suspects’ actions put them and others at risk, and they will now face the consequences of their actions.
