A federal jury in Greenville has delivered a guilty verdict to 52-year-old Felix A. Okafor of Wendell, North Carolina, on 25 counts of narcotics distribution and firearms offenses.
Okafor faces a minimum of 265 years and a maximum of 560 years imprisonment at sentencing.
The case unfolded in 2011 and 2012 when Okafor sold various quantities of marijuana and heroin to a confidential informant at his convenience store, the Flying Eagle, in Benson, North Carolina.
The government presented evidence that Okafor possessed a gun in his pocket during each of these transactions and used the Flying Eagle to cut and package the drugs to sell.
The store was located within 1000 feet of Benson Middle School, making it a particularly egregious offense.
Okafor’s conviction is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local agencies aimed at combating gun crime and targeting repeat offenders.
The investigation into Okafor’s activities was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.
Assistant United States Attorney Ethan A. Ontjes prosecuted the case.
