PHOENIX – Verland Anthony Sabori, 35, of Laveen, Ariz., a member of the Gila River Indian Community, has been sentenced to 65 months in federal prison for assault with a dangerous weapon. The sentence was handed down by Judge Douglas L. Rayes on Oct. 31, 2016, and includes a three-year supervised release term following his prison term.
Sabori, a three-time felon, pleaded guilty to shooting another tribal member in the back on Dec. 15, 2016, within the Gila River Indian Community boundaries. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of the attack.
The investigation into this heinous crime was led by the Gila River Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christina Covault prosecuted the case on behalf of the District of Arizona in Phoenix.
