Juan Geraldo Arredondo, Rioting, Mississippi 2015

A brutal prison riot left one correctional officer dead and several others assaulted, and now one of the perpetrators is facing justice.

Juan Geraldo Arredondo, 35, originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, pled guilty today before Senior U.S. District Judge David C. Bramlette III, to one count of rioting in a federal correctional facility, announced U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis and FBI Special Agent in Charge Donald Alway.

The prison riot occurred on May 20, 2012 at the Adams County Correctional Center. During the riot, several correctional officers were assaulted and one correctional officer died as a result of injuries he received during these assaults. Other correctional officers were taken captive and held hostage for several hours by participants in the riot.

Total damage to ACCC was estimated to be $1,305,142.00.

Arredondo will be sentenced on August 7, 2015 by U.S. District Judge David C. Bramlette III and faces a maximum penalty of ten years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Lemon.

As the investigation revealed, Arredondo’s actions on that fateful day had devastating consequences for the correctional officers who were assaulted and held hostage.

The guilty plea is a significant step towards justice for the victims and their families. The Adams County Correctional Center was severely damaged during the riot, with estimated damages totaling $1,305,142.00.
