Crime Pays, But Not for This Miami Man
WASHINGTON – Juan Javier Càrdenas, a 45-year-old resident of Miami, Florida, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic and possess unauthorized credit card numbers with the intent to defraud and trafficking unauthorized credit card numbers.
According to court documents, between February 2008 and May 2009, Càrdenas purchased stolen credit card information from a co-conspirator online. He then resold the information to third parties who used it to make fraudulent purchases with the credit cards.
On May 27, 2009, when US Secret Service agents searched Càrdenas’ home, they found 26,669 credit card numbers stored on his computer.
Càrdenas faces a maximum of five years in prison for the conspiracy charge and 10 years for the unauthorized credit card trafficking charge. He may also face fines and supervised release for both charges, as well as the confiscation of any property or gains derived from his criminal activities.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled for November 18, 2010.
The case was investigated by the US Secret Service and is being prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Marc Osborne of the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, and Trial Attorney Joseph E. Springsteen of the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section of the Criminal Division.
Càrdenas’ guilty plea provides a stark reminder that crime does not pay, and those who engage in such activities will be held accountable.
