Credit Card Thief Sentenced to 3 Years in Federal Prison

Juliet Estrada Perez, a 24-year-old Cuban national, was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for conspiring to steal credit card numbers and aggravated identity theft in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Estrada Perez, who had previously pleaded guilty to the charges, was also ordered to pay restitution of $7,873.97 jointly and severally with her codefendants and a $100 special assessment. She was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown.

According to court records, Estrada Perez and a codefendant were arrested in the Southern District of Florida on new state charges of committing credit card fraud while on bond in this case in April 2016. The two were later found in the Florida Strait by the United States Coast Guard and subsequently arrested.

Investigation revealed that Estrada Perez and her codefendants traveled from Florida in late July 2015 and agreed to place card skimming devices on gas pumps in the New Orleans area. They also admitted to possessing a card encoding machine, a card embossing machine, and a laptop computer containing stolen credit card information.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite commended the work of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the United States Secret Service, and Homeland Security Investigations, who investigated the case.

Assistant Attorney Hayden Brockett was in charge of the prosecution. The case resulted in six defendants pleading guilty to conspiring to possess and produce unauthorized access devices and device-making equipment.
