Julius K. Jordan, Murder-For-Hire, Flint MI, 2023

FLINT, MI – A Mobile, Alabama man is facing over 15 years behind bars after a botched hit in Flint, Michigan. Julius K. Jordan, 26, was sentenced yesterday for his role in a conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire and for illegally possessing a short barrel rifle, according to federal prosecutors.

The scheme unfolded in February 2022 when an individual, identified only as “Person-1,” allegedly hired Jordan and his accomplice, Reginald L. Hunter, to travel from Alabama to Flint with the intent to kill. Person-1 reportedly fronted them money for travel expenses. Once in Michigan, the pair were provided with assault rifles, and immediately began scouting for their target.

But the operation went south fast. On the evening of February 15th, 2022, a routine traffic stop by Michigan State Police troopers brought the whole plot crashing down. Jordan rolled through a stop sign, drawing the attention of the troopers. A search of the vehicle revealed the chilling truth: two loaded, semi-automatic rifles, one a short-barrel weapon with a collapsible stock, were found near the feet of Jordan and Hunter. The rifles were equipped with high-capacity magazines and chambered rounds.

U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison hailed the MSP troopers’ quick action as a stroke of luck that prevented a potential homicide. “This investigation is a great example of good police work…they thwarted a fatal shooting,” Ison stated. The case highlights the strong cooperation between state and federal agencies, with the ATF and FBI playing key roles in the investigation and prosecution. James Deir, Special Agent in Charge of ATF’s Detroit Field Division, bluntly warned, “If you commit gun crime in Michigan, you should pack your bags for prison.”

Jordan pleaded guilty to both charges and received a sentence exceeding 15 years in federal prison. Reginald L. Hunter is scheduled to stand trial on December 5th. The investigation into “Person-1,” the alleged mastermind behind the murder-for-hire plot, remains ongoing. Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Michigan, emphasized the importance of collaboration, noting that the Genesee County Safe Streets Task Force – comprised of ATF, MSP, and Flint Police – was instrumental in preventing a potentially catastrophic outcome.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney, and investigated by troopers of the Michigan State Police, and special agents of the ATF’s Flint Field Office and the FBI’s Flint Resident Agency. The message from law enforcement is clear: crossing state lines to commit violence in Michigan will be met with swift and severe consequences.
