Juniata Man Sentenced for Child Pornography Offenses
A 53-year-old Juniata man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in distributing and receiving child pornography. Coren C. Potts was sentenced in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for his crimes.
According to the Department of Justice, Potts was found to have uploaded at least 50 files of child pornography to a cloud storage account. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) received tip-offs about the suspicious activity and forwarded them to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Agents with the KBI reviewed the files and found they depicted child pornography. Search warrants were obtained for Potts’ wireless and cloud accounts, and his phone was seized for forensic examination. The review of his phone contents located 85 video files and 222 still images of child pornography.
Potts was previously convicted in 2008 for possession and distribution of child pornography. At the time, the investigation was turned over to the Nebraska State Patrol. When questioned about the CyberTips, Potts admitted to having child pornography on his phone and showed investigators images he had downloaded two days earlier.
This case was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project was launched in May 2006 and marshals federal, state, and local resources to identify and rescue victims of child exploitation.
Potts will serve 180 months in prison, followed by a 15-year term of supervised release. He will also be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.
The case was investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Nebraska State Patrol. U.S. Senior District Court Judge John M. Gerrard presided over the sentencing hearing.
Project Safe Childhood has been a cornerstone of the Department of Justice’s efforts to combat child exploitation. The initiative has led to the arrest and prosecution of thousands of individuals who have exploited children via the internet.
The Department of Justice urges anyone with information about child exploitation to come forward and report it to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
