Juniata Man Sentenced for Child Pornography Offenses

A 53-year-old Juniata man will spend the next 15 years behind bars for his role in distributing and receiving child pornography, federal authorities announced.

Coren C. Potts, 53, of Juniata, Nebraska, received the 180-month sentence in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska on May 14, 2024, after being convicted of receipt and distribution of child pornography. There is no parole in the federal system, meaning Potts will serve his full sentence without the possibility of early release.

Following his release from prison, Potts will be required to register as a sex offender and will begin a 15-year term of supervised release.

The case against Potts began in March 2023, when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) received eight different CyberTip reports from a cloud-based storage account. The reports revealed that a user had uploaded at least 50 files of visual depictions of sexually explicit conduct featuring children.

NCMEC forwarded the tips to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, which launched an investigation into the matter. Agents reviewed the files associated with the CyberTips and discovered that they depicted child pornography. Search warrants were subsequently obtained for the wireless account and the cloud account associated with a Kansas phone number, which was linked to Potts.

Potts, a registered sex offender with a prior conviction in 2008 for possession and receipt/distribution of child pornography, was interviewed by investigators. He initially volunteered that there was pornography on his phone, but when confronted with information about the CyberTips and shown images included in the NCMEC reports, Potts showed investigators several images of child pornography that he had downloaded just two days earlier.

A forensic examination of Potts’ phone revealed 85 video files and 222 still images of child pornography. The investigation was a joint effort between the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Nebraska State Patrol.

As part of the Project Safe Childhood initiative, a nationwide program launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse, the case against Potts will continue to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
