Anchorage man Michael Whitmore, 27, is in hot water after being indicted on charges of possession and distribution of child pornography.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Bryan Wilson, Whitmore was arrested by the FBI on March 10, 2021, after an investigation linked him to the distribution of child pornography images on the WICKR social media application.
Prosecutors claim that on or about March 3, 2021, Whitmore was observed distributing images of prepubescent minors, or minors who have not attained 12 years of age.
Whitmore’s indictment alleges that he possessed and accessed child pornography, including images involving prepubescent minors, when the FBI executed a federal search warrant on March 10, 2021.
If convicted, Whitmore faces a statutory minimum of five years in prison and a guideline sentence of more than 20 years in prison.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Reardon is handling the prosecution. The case is being brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Those with information regarding Whitmore are encouraged to contact the Anchorage FBI at (907) 276-4441.
