A Wichita woman admitted in federal court Friday to producing child pornography while babysitting a seven-year-old girl in her home. Stefanie Larsen, 46, pleaded guilty to one count of production of child pornography, capping a disturbing case that reveals the betrayal of trust at the heart of child exploitation crimes.
Larsen allowed a man to create a series of videos in which he masturbated while sitting near the sleeping child. According to her plea agreement, the man paid Larsen to stage and permit the acts in her residence. When the girl woke up during one of the sessions and cried out in fear, Larsen dismissed her distress, telling her she had just experienced a bad dream.
The recordings were produced while the child was under Larsen’s care, turning what should have been a safe environment into a scene of predatory abuse. Federal prosecutors emphasized that Larsen not only failed to protect the child but actively facilitated the abuse for financial gain.
U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister announced the plea, underscoring the severity of Larsen’s actions. “This was a gross abuse of trust,” McAllister said. “A babysitter is supposed to protect children, not profit from their exploitation.”
Sentencing is scheduled for April 25. Both the prosecution and defense have agreed to recommend a sentence of 17.5 years in federal prison, a term that reflects the gravity of the crime and the lasting harm inflicted on the victim.
FBI agents led the investigation, uncovering digital evidence that led to Larsen’s arrest and guilty plea. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hart prosecuted the case. Beall commended the FBI and Hart for their relentless work in bringing Larsen to justice.
