BECKLEY, W.Va. – Eddie Dwaine Justice, Jr., 30, of Hanover, Wyoming County, admitted to a sickening crime yesterday, pleading guilty to possession of child pornography. The plea carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years behind federal bars, a consequence announced by United States Attorney Carol Casto.
According to court documents, Justice possessed over 600 images and videos depicting minors engaged in sexual acts. The disturbing collection, discovered on his personal computer during a search of his residence, included imagery of prepubescent children. This wasn’t simply passive viewing; the investigation revealed Justice was actively using a peer-to-peer file sharing program, not only downloading but also distributing this vile material.
“This case should send a clear message – we will use every tool available to prosecute those who wish to do harm to children,” stated United States Attorney Casto, her voice grim. “There are significant consequences for child pornography crimes and we will continue working with our law enforcement partners to protect our communities and to hold those who victimize children accountable.” The statement rings hollow to many who see the endless cycle of these crimes continuing despite law enforcement efforts.
The FBI spearheaded the investigation, digging into Justice’s digital footprint and uncovering the extent of his depravity. Assistant United States Attorney Eric Bacaj is handling the prosecution, tasked with ensuring Justice receives the maximum penalty for his actions. The plea hearing took place before United States District Judge Irene C. Berger, who will ultimately determine Justice’s fate.
This case isn’t an isolated incident. It’s part of a broader, ongoing initiative by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. While officials tout these initiatives, the sheer volume of cases suggests a deeper, more systemic problem that continues to fester online and in communities across the state.
Justice is scheduled to be sentenced on August 2, 2017. Until then, he remains a stark reminder of the darkness that lurks beneath the surface, and the urgent need for continued vigilance and prosecution of those who prey on the innocent.
