ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – The streets of Albuquerque are set to witness a major shift in policing tactics as Acting Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta and Mayor Richard M. Berry join forces to address the troubled Albuquerque Police Department.
A press conference, set for this Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. MDT, will see the two high-profile officials, along with U.S. Attorney Damon P. Martinez and Chief Gorden E. Eden, Jr., unveil plans aimed at reforming the APD.
At the center of the controversy is a long history of allegations against the APD, including excessive force, racial profiling, and inadequate training.
Acting Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, a vocal advocate for civil rights, will lead the charge, accompanied by the Mayor and U.S. Attorney Martinez.
The press conference, held at the Albuquerque office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico, is expected to draw a large media presence, with cameras from local and national outlets in attendance.
