A shocking case of misprision of a felony has emerged in Waubay, South Dakota, leaving residents stunned.
According to court documents, 24-year-old Justin Grey has been charged with failing to report a crime of which he had knowledge to the proper authorities.
The alleged crime took place on June 10, 2014, when Grey and another person witnessed an assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Tragically, the victim ultimately died of her injuries.
Grey, who appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on October 13, 2016, pled not guilty to the Indictment filed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The charge of Misprision of a Felony carries a maximum penalty of 3 years of custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 5 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation is ongoing, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuting the case.
Grey was released pending trial, which has been set for December 20, 2016.
The charge is merely an accusation, and Grey is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
