Four Sentenced in Mail Theft Scheme Involving Stolen Checks, Driver’s Licenses
Lynchburg, Va. – In a case that exposed a brazen scheme involving the theft and cashing of stolen checks, four individuals have been brought to justice. Justin Rosser and Kristen Knowles stole mail from residential mailboxes, altering personal and business checks to suit their nefarious purposes.
Between June 2018 and January 2019, Rosser and Knowles targeted residential areas, stealing checks and driver’s licenses. They would then either cash the checks themselves or enlist the help of others, Amanda Thomas and Gloria Beckham, to do so at their direction. The defendants would often present the stolen driver’s licenses to banks to facilitate the cashing of the checks.
The scheme netted the duo approximately $8,000. However, Knowles’ involvement in the scheme didn’t end there. In the fall and early winter of 2019, she continued to steal and cash checks, raking in an additional $1,000.
The United States Postal Inspection Service and Campbell County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation, assisted by several other law enforcement agencies. The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office, Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Bedford Police Department, City of Lynchburg Police Department, Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office, and multiple Commonwealth’s Attorneys’ Offices also played a crucial role in bringing the defendants to justice.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Coleman Adams prosecuted the case, securing sentences for the defendants.

Justin Rosser: 36 months in prison, handed down on March 4, 2021
Kristen Knowles: 33 months in prison, handed down on April 19, 2021
Gloria Beckham: 12 months and 1 day in prison, handed down on April 19, 2021
