COEBURN, VA – Justine Kyle Elliott, 33, of Wise County, is facing a lengthy stretch behind bars after being sentenced to 188 months – over 15 years – in federal prison for flooding Southwest Virginia with methamphetamine and illegally possessing firearms. The sentence was handed down last week, capping a case that began with a drowsy driver and spiraled into a major drug bust.
The bust unfolded in August 2021, when Coeburn Police responded to a call about a man asleep at the wheel of a vehicle parked in a bank drive-thru. That man turned out to be Elliott, and a search of his vehicle revealed a significant quantity of methamphetamine, along with several firearms. Elliott quickly admitted his involvement in a large-scale drug operation that stretched across Southwest Virginia.
Court documents reveal Elliott wasn’t dealing in small amounts. Over a sixteen-month period, he trafficked more than 30 kilograms of methamphetamine into the region, some of it boasting a purity level of 100%. He also moved cocaine, establishing himself as a key player in the local drug trade. The sheer volume of drugs Elliott pushed into the community undoubtedly fueled addiction and related crime, according to investigators.
Elliott pleaded guilty to three separate federal charges: conspiring to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine; possessing with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine; and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The fact that he was already a convicted felon carrying firearms significantly escalated the severity of his crimes.
“This sentence sends a clear message,” said United States Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh in a press release. Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares and Special Agent in Charge Craig B. Kailimai of the ATF’s Washington Division joined in the announcement. The case was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Coeburn Police Department, highlighting the importance of interagency cooperation in tackling drug trafficking.
The prosecution was handled by Special Assistant United States Attorney M. Suzanne Kerney-Quillen, a Senior Assistant Attorney General with the Virginia Attorney General’s Major Crimes and Emerging Threats Section. While this conviction closes one chapter, the fight against methamphetamine and illegal firearms in Southwest Virginia continues. Elliott’s 188-month sentence serves as a stark warning to others involved in similar criminal activity.
