Kalamazoo Kingpin Smith Given 30-Year Sentence for Meth Distribution

GRAND RAPIDS – A ruthless Kalamazoo drug kingpin, Keith Smith, 46, has been sentenced to a harsh 30-year federal prison term for his relentless methamphetamine distribution operations.

According to U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey for the Western District of Michigan, Smith’s actions were not only criminal but also deadly. ‘A thirty-year sentence is a long time, but Keith Smith worked hard to earn it,’ VerHey declared. ‘His drug trafficking was killing people in Kalamazoo, and nothing short of a long prison term will stop him from dealing drugs.’

Smith’s criminal history was already extensive when he was charged with federal offenses. Despite multiple state convictions for drug dealing, Smith continued his illegal activities while under federal court supervision. In 2022, investigators used a confidential informant to purchase a pound of meth from him, leading to the discovery of over two kilograms of methamphetamine at Smith’s home, where a woman died from drug poisoning.

Further investigation revealed more than 13 pounds of methamphetamine in Smith’s possession on January 13, 2025. His career criminal status was solidified by his offense conduct and previous felony convictions, including six for dealing drugs. ‘Mr. Smith is a career criminal,’ stated Captain Michael Ferguson of the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team (KVET). ‘We hope this sentence sends a message to those who continue to commit criminal activity in and around Kalamazoo.’

Special Agent in Charge Andrew Lawton emphasized the DEA’s combined efforts with KVET and the U.S. Postal Inspectors Service that led to Smith’s apprehension. ‘This was an individual who showed no remorse in his criminal actions by continuing to bring lethal amounts of narcotics into the communities,’ Lawton said. ‘Yesterday’s sentencing reflects the seriousness of Mr. Smith’s crimes and brings a small measure of relief in western Michigan.’

This case, investigated by KVET, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Austin Hakes, Dan McGraw, Jonathan Roth, Olivia Ghiselli, and Alex Jansen.
