Kalum McPhedran, 29, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, found himself on the wrong side of the law after being sentenced to eight months in prison for unlawfully possessing a firearm.
According to court documents, McPhedran was prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction in 2010 for possession of a controlled substance. On January 15, 2013, McPhedran was found to be in possession of a Remington 12 gauge shotgun, a crime that would ultimately land him behind bars.
The case was investigated by the North Idaho Violent Crimes Task Force, a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Idaho State Police, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office, Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, Coeur d’Alene Police Department, Post Falls Police Department, and Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police.
The North Idaho Violent Crimes Task Force (NIVCTF) works tirelessly to combat violent crimes in the region, including armed robbery, kidnapping, felonious assault, and drug trafficking.
McPhedran’s case was prosecuted as part of Idaho’s Project Safe Neighborhoods Program, an initiative aimed at reducing gun violence in the state.
U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge handed down the eight-month prison sentence, which will be followed by three years of supervised release. McPhedran was also ordered to forfeit the firearm he unlawfully possessed.
The plea agreement, entered on August 20, 2013, marked a significant moment in the case, as McPhedran admitted to knowingly possessing the firearm despite being prohibited from doing so.
In conclusion, Kalum McPhedran’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of violating firearms laws. His eight-month prison sentence and subsequent supervised release serve as a reminder of the importance of adhering to these regulations.
