South Lake Tahoe Woman Sentenced to Over 12 Years in Prison for $1.4 Million Embezzlement Scheme
Kami Elois Power, 55, of Gardnerville, Nevada, was sentenced to 12 years and five months in prison for her role in a scheme that defrauded a South Lake Tahoe construction company of over $1.4 million, according to U.S. Attorney Eric Grant.
Power, who worked as an office manager and controller at the family-owned construction company, embezzled the funds between November 2019 and May 2023. She used various methods to disguise the fraudulent transfers, including creating fake vendor profiles and using the company’s credit card for personal purchases.
The investigation, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office, and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, found that Power used the stolen money to purchase two houses, several new cars and ATVs, a horse, and even a $29,000 Hawaii vacation.
Power’s sentencing marks her fifth time embezzling from an employer, with prior instances resulting in two criminal convictions, a civil lawsuit, and a probation violation. She was found guilty of 11 counts of wire fraud, three counts of bank fraud, and three counts of aggravated identity theft in November 2025.
As part of her sentence, Power is required to pay restitution to the victim of over $1.4 million and forfeit two houses and the horse she purchased with the stolen money. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Elliot Wong and Dhruv Sharma prosecuted the case.
