A Kanawha man is headed to federal prison for 15 years after admitting his role in a methamphetamine manufacturing conspiracy that flooded Cerro Gordo County with poison. Todd Edward Daniels, 49, was sentenced February 12, 2018, following a guilty plea entered August 9, 2017, to conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine.
Daniels, no stranger to the federal system, previously served time in 2005 for conspiracy to manufacture and distribute meth. His return to the same crime underscores a relentless cycle of addiction and distribution that continues to plague rural Iowa. This time, the stakes were higher and the evidence undeniable.
Court documents reveal Daniels oversaw a covert operation that produced more than 50 grams of actual (pure) meth between fall 2016 and May 2017. He coordinated with associates who bought pseudoephedrine-laced pills—knowing full well the ingredients would be cooked into crystal meth. The investigation tracked purchases, movements, and digital breadcrumbs that led straight to his door.
A search of Daniels’ Kanawha residence uncovered the telltale tools of a mobile drug lab: chemicals, glassware, and makeshift reactors used to process the deadly substance. These items sealed his fate, proving intent and active participation in a dangerous criminal enterprise.
U.S. District Judge Linda R. Reade handed down the 180-month sentence in Cedar Rapids. Daniels must also pay a $100 special assessment and will face a strict 10-year supervised release upon completion of his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system—every day of those 15 years will be served.
Daniels remains in U.S. Marshals custody, awaiting transfer to a federal penitentiary. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Lammers and investigated by the Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force, and the Britt Police Department.
