A former Bay Minette accountant has been sentenced to 8 months in prison for stealing over $60,000 from her former employer.
Karen Dawn Gurvitz, [formerly] the bookkeeper/accountant for Bay Minette-based company S & K Machineworks, pleaded guilty on August 22, 2018, to charges of Bank Fraud and Wire Fraud.
According to court documents, Gurvitz used her position at S & K to make close to $62,000 in personal purchases using an S&K company credit card between January 2015 and October 2017.
To conceal her actions, Gurvitz changed the business mailing address of S&K on all invoices related to her fraudulent purchases to her home address.
S&K, the victim of Gurvitz’s crimes, will receive $63,205 in restitution. The United States Secret Service, Mobile Field Office investigated the case, and Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Baugh prosecuted the case.
Gurvitz’s sentencing took place on December 6, 2018, before United States District Court Senior Judge Callie V. S. Granade.
The U.S. Secret Service plays a crucial role in securing the nation’s critical infrastructure, particularly in the areas of cyber, banking, and finance, stated Brian O’Neil, Resident Agent in Charge for the United States Secret Service Mobile Field Office.
