Dejan Karlovic, Federal Grant Embezzlement, New York 2024

BUFFALO, N.Y. – In a grim revelation of white-collar corruption, Dejan Karlovic, 30, from Amherst, NY, has been sentenced to three months in federal prison for the theft of $584,884.99 from Jericho Road Community Health Center’s federal grants program.

U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced the sentence imposed by U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra, Jr., which also includes restitution totaling $584,884.99 and the forfeiture of Karlovic’s BMW, a pickup truck, over $240,000 in cash, and various financial accounts.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles M. Kruly revealed that between January and March 1, 2024, Jericho Road received over $10,000 in federal grants. As Senior Grants Accountant for the center, Karlovic had access to several commercial credit cards and other financial accounts. From March 1 to June 26, 2024, he embezzled funds by submitting fraudulent invoices from a company called ‘D and D’, purporting them as legitimate expenses related to moving and relocation services provided by Jericho Road.

These fraudulent transactions were paid with a Jericho Road commercial credit card. Karlovic’s deception was uncovered during an investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, directed by Special Agent-in-Charge Philip Tejera.

The sentence for Karlovic is a stark reminder of the potential corruption that can occur within government-funded programs and the meticulous work required to uncover such deceitful practices.
