A St. Charles woman has been sentenced to two years of probation for her role in a prescription drug fraud scheme in St. Louis, Missouri.
Katie Diana Rooney, 39, pleaded guilty to a health care fraud charge and a charge of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud at the start of a hearing on Friday, October 13, 2023.
According to the evidence presented, Rooney fraudulently obtained prescription drugs for herself and her children and then sold them to others, including an undercover agent, between July 11, 2018, and October 2018.
The prescription drugs in question included the ADHD medication Adderall, oxycodone, and the antianxiety medication alprazolam. During the investigation, Rooney had an undercover law enforcement agent drive her to a pharmacy so she could obtain and then immediately sell the drugs to the agent.
Rooney and her children were enrolled in Missouri’s Medicaid program, MO HealthNet, and Rooney knew that pharmacies would request and receive reimbursement from Medicaid for the drugs she received.
As part of her sentence, Rooney will spend four months in home detention and perform 20 hours of community service. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Sarah E. Pitlyk.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Dorothy McMurtry prosecuted the case, with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the St. Charles Regional Drug Task Force, and the Missouri Medicaid Fraud Control Unit contributing to the investigation.
