KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A shocking turn of events unfolded in Kansas City as Brian H. Brown, a 49-year-old local, faces serious charges for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Brown was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of being a felon in possession of ammunition, a crime he is alleged to have committed on July 3, 2025. This indictment follows a federal criminal complaint filed against him on July 7, 2025.
The incident began when Kansas City, Mo. Police Department officers responded to a disturbance involving an armed party. During their investigation, they came into contact with Brown. As the officer suspected Brown of being under the influence, he attempted to comply with arrest procedures, but Brown resisted and a struggle ensued. It was during this confrontation that the officer noticed a handgun in Brown’s shorts pocket.
Upon closer inspection, the firearm was identified as a Polymer 80, “P-80”, camouflage-colored model, containing eleven rounds of ammunition. Disconcertingly, the firearm had no visible serial number. Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone with felony convictions to possess firearms or ammunition. Brown’s previous felony convictions include trafficking in drugs, distribution of controlled substances, possession of a controlled substance, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
This case falls under Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at eliminating transnational criminal organizations, reducing gun violence, and protecting communities from violent crime. Prosecuting the case is Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica L. Jennings, with investigations led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department.
The charges against Brown are mere accusations at this stage, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The evidence to support these charges will be presented to a federal trial jury, whose responsibility it is to determine guilt or innocence.
