KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City, Mo., man was indicted by a federal grand jury for drug trafficking and illegally possessing a machine gun following a harrowing police chase through the back yard of an Independence, Mo., home.
Jermel D. McCray, 28, now faces six counts, including possession of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine with intent to distribute, as well as firearms charges. The chase began when officers tried to stop a stolen Audi Q5 that McCray was driving on Jan. 22, 2023.
The pursuit ended in a dramatic foot chase through the snowy back yard of a residence, where McCray resisted arrest and attempted to flee. Officers eventually caught him after a struggle, uncovering a cache of firearms and drugs in his possession.
McCray’s prior felony conviction for second-degree murder makes his current charges all the more serious. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad K. Kavanaugh is handling the case, which is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime.
This chase and subsequent arrest underscore the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and gun violence in our communities. The Independence Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives played crucial roles in this investigation.
