Kansas City Man Sentenced for Armed Robbery, Carjacking During Pot Sale

A Kansas City man has been sentenced to 14 years and two months in prison for an armed robbery and carjacking that went down during an illegal drug sale.

Mykus Butler, 25, of Kansas City, Mo., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays on Monday, April 29, for his role in the violent crime.

Butler pleaded guilty on Aug. 30, 2023, to aiding and abetting a robbery, aiding and abetting the use of a firearm during a crime of violence, and aiding and abetting a carjacking.

According to court documents, Butler arranged to buy marijuana from the victim on March 10, 2020, and met him at a residence in Kansas City, Mo. However, instead of making good on the purchase, Butler and his associates turned violent.

Butler pointed a firearm at the victim and took his marijuana and gun. Two armed associates then pulled the victim and a front seat passenger out of the car, pistol whipping the victim in the process. After a brief confrontation, the victim and his passenger fled the scene, but not before one of Butler’s associates fired a shot at them.

The victim’s car was then stolen and driven away by Butler and his associates. This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Q. McCarther, with the FBI, Kansas City, Mo., Police Department, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives all contributing to the investigation.

Butler’s sentencing brings a measure of closure to the victim, who was left shaken by the violent encounter. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of illegal drug sales and the violence that can erupt when greed takes hold.
