KANSAS CITY, MO – Talib Bwana Muhammad, 27, of Kansas City, Missouri, is facing a long stretch behind bars after being sentenced to 210 months in federal prison yesterday for producing child pornography. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge D. Gregory Kays, stems from a horrific case involving the sexual exploitation of a 13-year-old minor.
According to court documents, Muhammad pled guilty on January 3, 2025, to one count of producing child pornography. The depravity began in June 2023, when Muhammad connected with the victim through a social media application. He didn’t just stop at online grooming; Muhammad actively worked to bring the child to Kansas City, purchasing an airline ticket to facilitate the encounter. When the victim’s guardian prevented her from traveling, Muhammad shockingly drove from Missouri to Texas to pick her up himself.
The scheme unraveled when the child was reported missing, triggering an Amber Alert. Law enforcement quickly zeroed in on Muhammad’s residence in the Western District of Missouri, rescuing the victim and bringing the predator to justice. Investigators discovered Muhammad had engaged in sexual contact with the minor and documented the abuse with his cell phone, creating disturbing images and videos.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Maureen A. Brackett skillfully prosecuted the case, built on the diligent work of the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Hitchcock, Texas, Police Department, and the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department. This wasn’t a spontaneous act; it was a calculated and predatory effort to exploit a vulnerable child.
Upon his release from prison, Muhammad will be required to register as a sex offender, facing a lifetime of scrutiny and restrictions under both federal and state laws. This conviction serves as a stark warning: those who prey on children will be relentlessly pursued and held accountable for their heinous crimes.
This case was brought forth under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice. The program aims to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation, bringing together federal, state, and local resources to identify, rescue, and prosecute offenders.
