Pennsylvania Postal Worker Charged in Greeting Card Heist

A brazen crime has shaken the small town of Summerhill, Pa., after a local postal worker was accused of stealing cash from greeting cards sent via U.S. mail.

Kelly Gruss, 35, a resident of Summerhill, Pa., has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Johnstown on charges of theft of mail by a postal employee, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton.

The indictment alleges that Gruss stole a total of $30 from greeting cards on two separate occasions, September 22 and September 25, 2014.

The maximum sentence for this crime is 10 years in prison, a fine of $500,000 or both. The actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant United States Attorney John J. Valkovci, Jr., is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.

The Office of Inspector General of the United States Postal Service conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.
