Kelly Krieger, Armed Bank Robbery, Indiana 2019

Federal authorities have secured a conviction in a brazen armed bank robbery that shook the community of Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Christmas Eve 2019. Kelly Krieger, a 38-year-old bank employee, was sentenced to 69 months in prison for aiding and abetting armed bank robbery, announced United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson.

According to documents in the case, Krieger was involved in the planning and execution of the robbery, working alongside co-defendant Horia Malutan. Krieger admitted to law enforcement that she and Malutan planned the robbery, including providing instructions on where to stand, what words to use, and how to exit the bank.

The bank, located in Fort Wayne, was robbed by Malutan, who was armed with a deadly weapon. Law enforcement determined that Krieger’s involvement went beyond mere acquiescence, and she was subsequently charged with aiding and abetting armed bank robbery.

Krieger’s sentence also includes 2 years of supervised release and a hefty restitution order of $202,184 to the victim bank. This staggering amount reflects the severity of the crime and the devastating impact on the financial institution.

Co-defendant Malutan, who pleaded guilty to the armed bank robbery, received a 57-month prison sentence and was ordered to pay restitution to the victim bank in May 2022. The stark contrast between their sentences serves as a reminder of the differing roles they played in the crime.

The investigation into the armed bank robbery was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of the Fort Wayne Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Lesley J. Miller Lowery prosecuted the case, securing a guilty plea from Krieger and a subsequent conviction.

The ruling sends a clear message that those who aid and abet violent crimes will face severe consequences. As Krieger begins her 69-month prison sentence, the community of Fort Wayne can rest easier knowing that justice has been served.
