BOGALUSA, LA – Kelvin Warren, 30, is looking at a significant stretch behind bars after admitting to a massive drug haul discovered during a routine traffic stop last year. Warren pled guilty on November 30th before U.S. District Judge Barry Ashe to possession with the intent to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine and more than 40 grams of fentanyl – enough poison to kill thousands. The feds are aiming high, seeking a mandatory minimum of 10 years, but potentially life in prison.
The bust went down January 27, 2022, when local police pulled over the vehicle Warren was riding in. A search revealed a veritable chemist’s kit of misery on the passenger floorboard: roughly 1.7 pounds of methamphetamine, 5.8 ounces of fentanyl, a scale for weighing the deadly substances, and a collection of other drug paraphernalia. It wasn’t a small-time operation; this was a serious quantity of highly dangerous narcotics flooding the streets.
Federal prosecutors, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurice E. Landrieu Jr. of the Narcotics Unit, aren’t messing around. Beyond the potential life sentence, Warren faces a fine of up to $10 million, a minimum of five years of supervised release after any prison term, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 14, 2024, giving Warren time to consider the gravity of his choices.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office. While the ATF’s involvement might seem unusual in a purely drug case, the agency often gets involved when there’s a suspected connection to other criminal activity, or when the scale of the operation warrants federal intervention. The ATF didn’t detail if this was the case.
Federal officials are framing the case as a win for “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The program focuses on building trust with communities, supporting local anti-violence groups, and prioritizing strategic enforcement. Whether PSN truly makes a difference on the ground is debatable, but the feds are keen to tie every successful bust to the program’s overall goals.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the relentless flow of dangerous drugs into Louisiana and the lengths to which traffickers will go to profit from addiction and despair. The streets of Bogalusa, and beyond, are a little bit safer with Warren off them – but the pipeline remains open, and the fight against fentanyl and methamphetamine is far from over.
