Falsely Claiming Military Service Lands Wisconsin Man in Hot Water

A Wisconsin man’s attempts to deceive the system have landed him in serious trouble. Kenneth E. Jozwiak, 67, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, has admitted to falsely claiming he was a Navy SEAL wounded four times in Vietnam.

According to Carole S. Rendon, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Jozwiak’s actions are ‘an affront to those who saw combat and those wounded fighting on behalf of our nation.’

Jozwiak’s lies were exposed after he exhibited a military discharge certificate in 2014 that claimed he was a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran, a four-time recipient of the Purple Heart, and a Navy SEAL. However, court documents reveal that Jozwiak knew these claims were entirely false.

As a result of his deception, Jozwiak defrauded the Department of Veterans Affairs out of $2,289 in veteran’s entitlements he received between August and December 2014.

Things took a turn for the worse when Jozwiak made several false statements to federal agents about his fraudulent activities and military service in January 2015. He also attempted to obstruct an official proceeding by tampering with a material witness, according to court documents.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Benedict S. Gullo, with the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General—Criminal Investigative Division leading the investigation.

Jozwiak is scheduled to be sentenced on May 18 for his crimes, which include unlawfully exhibiting a military discharge certificate, theft of government money, making false statements to federal agents, and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding.
