Fresno Man Pleads Guilty to Passport Fraud, Faces Decades Behind Bars
Fresno resident Kenneth Laitman, also known as John Rodman, is facing serious time after pleading guilty to passport fraud in a shocking case that has left authorities stunned. The 79-year-old stockbroker-turned-endoscopy-practice-worker, admitted to assuming the identity of a deceased child, John Rodman, who died at the tender age of four in 1950.
According to court documents, Laitman’s elaborate scheme began in 1984 when he moved to California from New York, leaving behind his life as a stockbroker. He began working at an endoscopy practice under the assumed identity of John Rodman, a name that would haunt him for decades to come.
Laitman’s scheme was nothing short of brazen, as he went on to obtain various forms of identification, work different jobs, open bank accounts, receive government benefits, and even travel overseas using a U.S. Passport he obtained in 2004. The passport, which he attempted to renew, was issued to the very identity he had assumed.
The investigation into Laitman’s activities was a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Barton is leading the prosecution.
Laitman is scheduled to be sentenced on April 29, 2024, and faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. However, the actual sentence will be determined at the discretion of the court, taking into account various statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of identity theft and the importance of verifying the authenticity of identification documents. As Laitman prepares to face the music, one thing is certain – his elaborate scheme has finally come to an end, and justice will be served.
In a shocking twist, Laitman’s identity theft scheme spanned over three decades, leaving a trail of deception and confusion in its wake. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how many others may have fallen victim to his elaborate scheme.
