Abington Man Pleads Guilty to Oxycodone Conspiracy
BOSTON – In a shocking turn of events, Kenneth Veiga, a 32-year-old resident of Abington, Massachusetts, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute oxycodone pills in federal court in Boston. The guilty plea was accepted by U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper, who scheduled sentencing for July 18, 2024.
The investigation, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, revealed that Veiga and his co-conspirators were involved in an oxycodone drug trafficking organization from November 2022 to May 2023. During this time, intercepted communications revealed that Veiga obtained oxycodone pills from co-conspirator Cristan Russell, who then redistributed them to others.
However, Veiga’s troubles started when a search of his previous residence in July 2023 turned up oxycodone pills, a polymer-80 9 mm pistol, and nine rounds of commercially manufactured ammunition. A separate search of his current apartment yielded fentanyl pills, oxycodone pills, and approximately $58,000.
The charge of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute oxycodone pills carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, at least three years and up to life of supervised release, and a fine of up to $1 million. Assistant U.S. Attorney John T. Mulcahy of the Narcotics & Money Laundering Unit is prosecuting the case.
The investigation was part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, which identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level criminal organizations threatening the United States using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach.
Veiga’s guilty plea is a significant blow to the oxycodone trafficking ring, and authorities are confident that this will lead to further convictions and a safer community. The case is a reminder of the devastating consequences of involvement in the illicit opioid trade.
