A Lawrence man has been charged with cocaine trafficking after allegedly accepting a shipment of 32 kilograms of suspected cocaine in a Woburn parking lot on May 4, 2024.

Victor Berroa Mercedes, 31, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston for his involvement in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine. He faces one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine, and one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

According to the indictment, Berroa Mercedes allegedly accepted the delivery of 32 kilograms of suspected cocaine in a Woburn parking lot before being arrested. During his arrest, it is alleged that he dropped a plastic bag containing $32,800 in cash while attempting to flee from officers.

The charges carry a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, at least three years and up to a lifetime of supervised release, and a fine of up to $1 million. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutes which govern the determination of a sentence in a criminal case.

Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Stephen Belleau, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration, New England Field Division, made the announcement. Valuable assistance was provided by the Boston Police, Massachusetts State Police and Illinois State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Mulcahy is prosecuting the case.

The indictment is the result of a joint investigation by law enforcement agencies. Berroa Mercedes will appear in federal court in Boston at a later date. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
